Cambridge Union Debating Society

Cambridge Union Society has developed a worldwide reputation as a noted symbol of free speech and open debate. The private debating society is the largest society at the University of Cambridge in England and has been operating for almost 200 years. This year Abu Dhabi will host a team from the Cambridge Union who will offer their expertise and experience to EWB delegates, and facilitate the student debates.

The Cambridge Union is best known for its debates which often receive national or international media attention. Recent visitors have included Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, Michael Howard, Michael Moore, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer Secretary General of NATO, Gillian Anderson and Bruce Forsyth as well as a multitude of British politicians.

The top members of its debating team compete internationally against other top debating societies, and Cambridge regularly fields one of the most successful teams at the World Universities Debating Championships. EWB delegates will have the special opportunity to learn from and engage with, the following members of the debating society:

 

Adam Bonnifield
Adam has recently come to Cambridge after completing his undergraduate studies at Cornell University in New York. He has extensive experience debating for Cornell in the American Parliamentary Debate Association, and competed for Cambridge at the 2006 World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) in Vancouver. He is currently studying for a Masters degree in Education at Fitzwilliam College, and has amassed several years of experience of teaching and debate coaching.
Anna Lintner
Anna is Director of Debating at the Cambridge Union Society. She has debated for Cambridge at the WUDC twice, and was in charge of the Cambridge Inter-Varsity competition in 2005. She has extensive experience of debate coaching, having worked for the English Speaking Union during her gap year. She is currently in her final year at Newnham College, where she is studying Law.
David Tite
David shares the post of Director of Debating with Anna. He reached the quarter finals of the 2006 World Universities Debating Championships and was Champion of the Oxford IV, the UK 's largest debating competition, in 2005. He currently leads the Cambridge Union's advanced debating workshop and has coached at high school and university level for the last three years. He is a final year undergraduate at Pembroke College, where he studies Linguistics.
